Laser Engraver Newsletter - April 2014

Greetings:LaserU Turns 8!

I started with LaserBits on January 3, 2006. My job was to get LaserUniversity up and running. There had been two people in my position previously and LaserU was still not online. Talk about pressure! I was entirely new to the laser engraving industry, so I had to teach myself to laser engrave while creating LaserU to teach others how to laser engrave! I honestly thought my job would last about 6 months. I mean how much could there be to laser engraving? Well, the joke was on me. LaserU launched on April 15, 2006 - eight years ago - and I am still learning about this industry.

Mike, my boss and co-owner of LaserBits, was ahead of his time.....and he usually still is. He knew there was a large gap, in terms of education, in the laser engraving business. His vision of creating LaserUniversity was chided and rebuffed. I certainly am glad he rarely listens to naysayers. I love working on LaserU. My children have gone from infants to ages 7 and 9 on my engraved examples inside the lessons. They do not know life without laser engraving. "Hey, mommy, can you engrave my Kindle, my bat, dog tags for my friends, a frame for my teacher?"

Here's to the longest 6 month job I have ever had!

Greetings:

We just got back from Las Vegas and are trying to get caught up. I had a fantastic time. It is always neat to finally meet so many LaserU subscribers. Putting a face to a name is great and I get to hear face-to-face feedback on the site. I hope you had a great time too!

Laser Spotlight

Each month we showcase an item, product or skill from LaserU. We give a summary of the item and provide links for more information. This month we will look at unique frames. This comes from our Project Center lesson titled Glass Photo Stands.

Glass Photo Stand

These glass photo stands really showcase the images. The stands can either be engraved (top image) or can be used with CerMark for Tile & Glass (lower image). And if you are ever in Des Moines or Cedar Falls, Iowa, check out Jokers! They kindly lent me the logo and images.

Things to keep in mind:

I enjoy working on all parts of LaserU but there is one section that I really dig into and love to add content to.....and that is the Project Center. It is so fun to think of creative ways to use the laser to create new and different products. If you have any neat products that you have seen or have created yourself....let me know! Please send me an email with any ideas you may have for Project Center additions. Pictures will be extremely helpful and even DRAW files, if you have them. And you will receive credit via this newsletter and your name (if you wish) being included in the lesson itself.

I have had many people ask me over the years the best way to engrave pens on a high volume. When you have several pens to engrave, why do one at a time?

This pen fixture is easy to use and all LaserBits pens fit in it. Additionally, a DRAW file with the template for the fixture is available for free!
