In June and into this month we are working on updating our Preview LaserU video to include our new sections - the Project Center and Your Laser System (updated with the addition of a Trotec laser). Based on our counts we have had many subscribers visit these two sections. Any ideas or feedback you have about these areas is appreciated. Just shoot us an This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. The launch of our new video should be next week! I will send out an email when it goes live.

Who is LaserU? LaserU Survey

Exactly who is LaserU? Who are the people that are part of the success and creation?

Mike Fruciano - Mike founded LaserU. This has been his brainchild and baby for years. He knew learning laser engraving online was an important step for the industry and worked hard to make it come to fruition. Mike is also co-owner of LaserBits.

Kathryn Arnold - Kathryn (that's me!) creates LaserU with the direction of Mike. I maintain the site, create the content for all sections and the videos. This is my full-time gig! I also answer emails and phone calls from LaserU subscribers.

Sam Luger- Sam does marketing and photography for LaserBits & LaserU. Her credits include all of the beautiful flyers, brochures, catalogs and product images. Her work can specifically be seen in LaserU as the finished engraved products in the lessons and Project Center.

Sandy Sayle - Sandy answers technical support questions for LaserBits and LaserU.

We have been reviewing the results of the June survey.Thank you for taking the time to fill it out.

If you are still interestSurveyMonkeyed in filling out this feedback tool (it takes less than 5 minutes) and have lost your link to the survey or are a newer subscriber and did not receive a link, please This email address is being protected from spambots. I have already updated our Testimonials page with your wonderful comments. We have restructured this page and how we post the quotes.

We received a lot of ideas on what you will like to see in LaserU in the future. Probably the two most popular are information on photo engraving and more on CorelDRAW/PHOTO-PAINT. We will add more on both areas. For now, please visit Course 5 for photo-engraving tips.

Laser Spotlight

Each month we showcase an item, product or skill from LaserU. We give a summary of the item and provide links for more information. This month we will look at Advanced Shapes and other Tools in CorelDRAW.

In this lesson, we will be combining a plethora of DRAW skills. To name a few:

  • Shapes
  • Duplicate objects
  • Rotate & Mirror objects
  • Fitting text to a path
  • Using Smart drawing, Ellipse, Rectangle, Drop Shadow, 3-Point Curve tool tools
    Much more!

Below you will find a progression of images as it leads to the final product. This lesson really helps to put different concepts of DRAW together to create more exciting and intricate products. (Note: not all of the images and steps in the actual lesson are indicated below.)

Wow! What a jam-packed month May was! Even though we have been working steadily on the updated LaserU site, May was the time to tie it all in and launch. Hopefully the transition was seamless for you and you have now had time to review Your Laser System, The Project Center, Resources and Materials which were our new additions and changes. You can reread our May edition of this newsletter for a quick summary of each section.

The Corel Center LaserU Survey

The Corel CenterHave you ever worked in CorelDRAW or Corel Photo-Paint and thought, "There must be a better way to do this," or "I wonder what this tool does."? Well, send us an email explaining what you are trying to accomplish. We are looking for skills to add to The Corel Center and need your help. If we do not add your suggestion to the center, at the very least, we will reply to your email with helpful ideas.

SurveyMonkey
A new survey about LaserU will be emailed to you tomorrow (Wednesday, June 6). You will receive a link, in the email, to click on and will be asked 10 questions that will take approximately 5 minutes of your time. The link in the email will take you to the host of our survey at SurveyMonkey.

The last survey we did yielded The Project Center, the Materials Kits, and Your LaserSystem. The surveys are very important to us. Most of our changes have been as a result of subscriber feedback. We look forward to your continued interest in helping us improve.

Laser Spotlight (New Feature)

Each month we will showcase an item, product or skill from LaserU. We will give a summary of the item and provide links for more information. This month we will look at Inlays. Inlays are a great way to add variety and dimension to your laser engraved product. It can be done with a many different substrates and works especially well with wood as the examples below show. The inlay can be a simple as finding a shape and rastering engraving it, to the proper depth, on the substrate and then vectoring cutting the inlaid portion to fit.

InlayInlay

Inlays can also be more intricate and detailed in finding an image to use and need to convert and cut out the appropriate parts in finding the proper item to raster engrave and vector cut.

InlayInlay

For more information on how the above were created, visit LaserU's Project Center and see the Inlay lesson in the Novice section and the Inlay lesson in the Experienced section.

We have some big projects in the works for LaserUniversity! You will be seeing these changes at the end of May. Read on below for more information. These changes will occur overnight and should run seamlessly. You will be able to see a difference in the left navigation menu with the options available but LaserU, itself, will continue to run the same.

The Project Center Your Laser System

CorelCenterThe Project Center is where you will learn how to create specific products and come away with product ideas for your business and customers.

Keep in mind that this area will not provide details steps in Corel DRAW as it focuses on the project and product itself. For more detailed instructions on DRAW or PAINT skills, visit The Corel Center.

If you are interested in a particular project/product and do not see it, please send us an This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.">email.

This section will get you up and running with the brand new laser you purchased. It will also provide tips on better performance for existing laser engraver owners.

Understanding your Laser System is extremely important for producing great results. This section is a must for all laser engravers. Even if you have laser engraved before, this course is a great refresher.

To launch, we will begin with one laser from each Epilog, ULS and Trotec.

Resources
Feature Articles

Since we will be adding new items to our left navigation menu we have decided to do some "housework" on it. Instead of continually adding items and letting the left menu become too long and unwieldy we are beginning to condense some options into categories that (hopefully) make sense. When our new sections, described above, roll out we are going to move several sections into one section titled Resources. Under Resources you will find Ask the Professor, Terminology, Select Readings, the LaserU newsletter and Weblinks.

Material Kits

Go to Materials listed in the left navigation menu in LaserU and it will link to a list of items needed to complete our 12 courses and lessons inside the Learning Center. The materials are broken down by course and lesson and items are grouped together in kits sold by LaserBits.

Survey Results LaserU Icons

Our recent LaserU Survey yielded a lot of great information.

From this survey we have compiled a great list from you, the subscribers!

VideoVersionFor question 5 of our survey we asked how you liked the videos included in lessons that contain CorelDRAW skills. We had a few respondents answer that they did not know we had videos. In the Learning Center look for this icon below the Materials section to see if it contains a video. When you see this icon, click on it!

In the Corel Center you have to look at Checkmarkthe grid to see if a printable and/or video version is offered. It will be denoted by a red checkmark.

We have also had inquiries about printing out the lessons in the Learning Center. The printable version is available in the Materials section as shown below in red.

Current projects
I am working on three exciting additions to LaserU. All three are slated to launch in late May 2007.

  • The Project Center – this area will feature single project ideas for your own showroom and items to offer your customers
  • Your Laser System- this area will feature specific information on laser systems. We will launch with information on three brands of lasers and increase in the future.
  • Material Kits – we are creating kits of materials to coincide with the materials used in The Learning Center. Now you will be able to order the materials and work right along with the videos!
